BEDA 13 – Top 20 Villain Songs

Image

It took some time and even new ideas I hadn’t thought of but here it is. My top 20 villain songs. The only real rule is that the song should be performed at least in part by said villain.

#20

House of Villains – Our House Now

What better way to kick off the list than with a wide cast of Disney villains? The main reason this made the list is the wide selection of iconic (and minor) Disney villains singing together. Some of the singing voices aren’t so great but for the most part they’re pretty good.

#19

“Sweet” – What You Feel

From the Buffy episode Once More With Feeling (the musical episode) the antagonist of the episode explains the dark nature of the world becoming a musical. While not the strongest song in the episode but it’s a neat introduction to the character and far from the weakest.

#18

The Great Mighty Poo – The Great Mighty Poo

No explanation necessary.

#17

Rasputin – The Dark of the Night

Like or dislike Anastasia I imagine most can agree this is a pretty cool song. Jim Cummings does a fantastic job mimicking Christopher Lloyd’s performance. The only reason this is so low on the list is because some of the lyrics seem out of place.

#16

Rogues of Gotham – Rogues are We

As well as the always talented Starkid actors this song makes it into the list because of the characters singing. Many of Batman’s most well known members of his rogues gallery singing together, it may not be an official musical but I consider it the theme for these characters.

#15

Jafar – You’re Only Second Rate

While he did have a song in the first movie it was just a reprise of Prince Ali (a good reprise but it wasn’t really his song). In Return of Jafar we get this track which is very much Jafar’s song.

#14

Queen Chrysalis and Princess Cadence – This Day Aria

Yes the first real villain song of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic was bound to make the list (one could argue that the Flim Flam Brothers song counts but I wouldn’t call them villains which is why it isn’t in the list). What I like about this song is the conflicting views of Chrysalis and Cadence as they each sing about the same thing. Then you have the reprise which is Chrysalis standing triumphant having achieved her goals.

#13

Mumbo – Master Of Your Fate

Yep, a song from Teen Titans. Looking back at this song I can’t help hearing The Ice King in Mumbo’s voice. Tom Kenny is a fantastic singer who I would like to hear sing more often.

#12

Oogie Boogie – Oogie Boogie’s song

There aren’t many songs about the Boogie Man planning to eat Santa, that alone is enough to merit a spot on the list.

#11

Frollo – Hellfire

Often quite high in people’s top 10 lists and for good reason. It’s a very dark song and there’s not much I can say that others haven’t said better before.

#10

Dr. Doofenshmirtz & Dr. Doofenshmirtz – Brand New Best Friend

Kicking off the top 10 we have something silly. There are a few great Dr. Doofenshmirtz songs in the show but as a villain song this was perfect, especially since the eyepatched Doofenshmirtz is the central antagonist of the movie. I can tell people are going to disagree with this choice but as a fan of the show this was a natural choice for me. I also want to point out Evil Love and an honourable mention.

#9

GLaDOS – Want You Gone

Still Alive was a great track but with Portal 2 came this song which I personally prefer. Jonathan Coulton’s version is also fantastic and worth a listen. If they make a Portal 3 (knowing Valve and the number three I don’t see it being any time soon) I look forward to hearing GLaDOS’ next song.

#8

Ice King and Marceline – Remember You

While Marceline does most of the singing the words are from the Ice King. While not the same tone as most of the choices here I felt it counts. I’m sure any Adventure Time fans reading will understand why this is in the top 10.

#7

Dr. Horrible – Brand New Day

The song where Dr. Horrible starts to make a step towards being a true villain. Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog is one of my favourite musicals and this song had to be in the list. Honourable mentions from the musical are Slipping and the Bad Horse letters.

#6

Dr. Drakken – Rappin’ Drakken

Because there’s nothing more evil than advertizing.

#5

Pincer – Kick It Up A Notch

More Starkid. Out of all their shows I’d say Starship is my favourite and thus the villain song is pretty high on the list. The reprise is also worth mentioning.

#4

Robot Devil – Robot Hell

I feel like this should be in more villain song lists. Still one of the best songs from Futurama. Sadly a decent version of the video isn’t on YouTube.

#3

Scar – Be Prepared

The Lion King has a very iconic soundtrack with several memorable songs and Be Prepared is no exception. Out of the classic Disney villain songs this is my favourite, but my overall favourite Disney villain song…

#2

Dr. Facilier – Friends on the Other Side

One of the newest but I’d say Disney’s best villain song. It captures what was great about the past villain songs while still being unique. Also Keith David’s voice is fantastic making the song work even better.

#1

Team Rocket – Double Trouble

Oh like you didn’t see this coming. For all that 4Kids did wrong they had quite a cast and gave us a wonderful selection of songs. Turning Team Rocket’s motto into a song that captures the characters perfectly. Also there’s the Japanese counterpart Maemuki Roketto Dan which is also worth a mention.

Well that’s my list. I hope you liked it. Tomorrow’s blog will most likely be about the YouTube Gathering I’m attending.
