BEDA 2014: 30 – My Next Art Project Plans

So BEDA is over now. So what is next? Well I’m going to be focusing on my art again, with the DC project over I might all well talk about future plans. So there are some of my planned projects.

Image

Harry Potter

One thing I’m planning with this project is drawing a few of the major characters as they are in each book. It would be a good way to practice drawing the same character while looking older/younger. Like my Marvel and DC projects I’ll draw from the different designs the characters have to choose from.

Image

Labcoat Snape is part of the plan. He’s a professor that teachers potions, that’s just chemistry with magical ingredients. He’s a wizard scientist.

Image

My own characters

I haven’t drawn my own characters in years. Last time I drew Ray here he still looked like Red from the Pokémon Adventures manga with different clothes and fangs and was a completely different character. I’ve also had some stories in my head that might be fun to draw. This won’t be a consistent project, I’ll probably draw characters and creatures from one story then move to another project.

Image

My friends’ own characters

I’ve discussed this plan with a few of my friends. I don’t think this will be a big project but something I’ll do in-between projects. The character used as an example is my friend Alice’s character name Honeysuckle.

Image

Characters from different franchises as Pokémon Trainers

Because coming up with Pokémon teams for characters is a lot of fun.

Image

More Marvel and DC

After I’ve worked on some more projects I will return to the two the started it all. There are teams I’ve postponed, characters that didn’t exist during the first Marvel projects and designs I want to update.

Other than Harry Potter being the next project I have no set order for these projects yet.

This is the end of BEDA but I will blog here again.

BEDA 2014: 29 – Reaction Images

So tomorrow will be the last day of BEDA and I was focusing a lot on my drawing that I forgot to think of an idea for today’s BEDA. And now I only have half any hour to type this. So I’m going to do another mostly images blog as one last cop-out last minute BEDA entry. Next year I’m going to avoid doing both VEDA and BEDA, clearly coming up with TWO topic ideas every day is overdoing it. Anyway today I’ll be posting a few of my favourite reaction images I’ve found over time by just scrolling through my reaction images folder and seeing what I can find. Yes it’s a lazy idea but unless a better idea pops into my head in the next few minutes (it didn’t) I’m going with this.

Image

I’m surprised I don’t have more Nadesico reaction images to be honest.

Image

I should use this one more.

Image

Through my friend Alice I have a few Coraline reaction images.

Image

And some King of the Hill ones from my friend Izzie.

Image

I have more Dr. Doofenshmirtz reaction images that I probably need.

Image

Mostly made by me too.

Image

Screencapped this the moment it came up.

Image

Also in the early days of /vp/ I made a few Gary images.

Image

They don’t really get used much any more.

Image

While we’re on reaction images I’ve made I’m quite pleased with Hipster Clarkson.

Image

Made this for an image detailing a few of my favourite things in Pokémon.

Image

Because TF2 comics are awesome.

Image

Well that’s all for today. See you tomorrow for an actual written blog and the end of BEDA.

BEDA 2014: 28 – Kill la Kill final thoughts

Image

So I’ve just finished the last episode of Kill la Kill which I started watching on Saturday. Along with Attack on Titan this was the other new anime that most of the anime community was talking about and sparked new cosplay trends. I’d been meaning to watch it for a while but put other shows as a priority until it came up in conversation with a few of my friends who recommended it so I decided I’d watch it once I caught up on Adventure Time.

Image

The first arc is pretty simple to follow. Protagonist wants revenge but must fight a line up of powerful warriors to get to the person they want to fight. But as that arc draws to a close things start changing and the show’s lore, which is easy to accept considering the show’s goofy humour, becomes more important. This was also the point where the show’s quality skyrocketed from being pretty cool to plain awesome. This was a similar strength Gurren Lagann had which was made by the same team back when they were in Gainax.

Image

One thing you’ll notice pretty early on, like episode one early, is that this show has a fair amount of fanservice. It is lampshaded from the start too with characters complaining about or drooling over the designs of the transformed Kamui uniforms. It’s still distracting for most of the first arc but after a certain point you stop noticing it. Not because it decreases, quite the opposite in fact, but because it happens for everyone.

Image

In fact by the last few episodes those awkwardly revealing Kamui forms are some of the least revealing outfits when compared to what the male characters wear. I mean yeah it’s still fanservice and they don’t hide that fact but I’ve got to give them credit for giving the same treatment to their male characters. I mean there’s a group called Nudist Beach whose membership is mostly male.

Image

As far as characters go my favourite has to be Mako. She is the comic relief sidekick with an Excel Saga level of randomness and is goofy even when things get serious but that is all part of what makes her such a great character. Other characters go through changes as the series goes on but Mako is the same old Mako from episode 1 to episode 24 and it’s that same Mako that helps keeps Ryuko from loosing herself. There are other reasons why she’s a great character but I think I’ll let them speak for themselves if you decide to watch the series.

Image

In conclusion Kill la Kill is a show I’m glad I watched. It was exciting, funny, heartwarming, heartbreaking and even a bit creepy at times. I don’t think it’s for everyone but if you like anime, especially if you liked Gurren Lagann, I think it’s worth checking out. It’s only 24 episodes long and I managed to marathon it over the course of three days. Thank you to my friends who recommended I watch it. Now to figure out which of the many shows I’m watching to focus on next…

BEDA 2014: 27 – Things I’d like to see in Kingdom Hearts 3

Image

Another upcoming game I’m looking forward to is Kingdom Hearts 3. Very little is known about it so far as the footage we’ve shown shows very little new content. Sora’s outfit is the same, the only known Disney location is Olympus Colosseum. So I figured I’d list off a few things I’d love to see in this next installment in the franchise.

Image

Playable Kairi

We’ve had the ability to play as Riku, I think it’s time Kairi got a chance to use that Keyblade of hers. At the very least she should get to be a party member like Riku in Kingdom Hearts 2.

Image

Better use of Vivi

When I heard Vivi was going to be in Kingdom Hearts 2 I was excited. But in the end he’s just there for the training missions and doesn’t even use magic. Vivi is my favourite character in Final Fantasy IX but here he’s the Final Fantasy character given the smallest role. My brother pointed out that the fact he looks like the Heartless would have fit in so well with his character arc in FFIX where he’s often seen as the enemy. Also on a similar note…

Image

More Final Fantasy IX

Yes we’ve seen plenty of Final Fantasy VII, VIII and X characters and I’m sure we’re bound to have some Final Fantasy XIII characters around the corner but IX is an underrated classic.

Image

A Frozen world

Considering how popular Frozen still is it’s almost inevitable the movie will have some presence in this game. The question is if it can word as a world and I think it can. I expect most fans would expect Elsa to be the world’s party member but having Anna in your party would allow you to follow the main story more while also having a boss fight with Elsa’s Snow Golem.

Image

Something from Pixar

Pixar have been the source of many of Disney’s most popular films for many years and I think it’s time Kingdom Hearts turned to it for ideas. Brave and Incredibles seem the easiest to adapt into the Kingdom Hearts style but I can also see Toy Story or Monsters Inc/University working.

Image

A galaxy far, far away

Disney own Star Wars now and I’m sure I know I’m not the only one who loves the idea of a lightsaber keyblade.

Image

Indiana Jones

Lets not forget Disney own this franchise now too.

Image

The Marvel Universe

Best part about this option is that it doesn’t need to follow an existing story. Need a world for the big plot stuff to happen on, Marvel would be perfect.

Image

A Final Fantasy villain to fight who ISN’T SEPHIROTH

Yes we all know about the secret boss fights with Sephiroth but I think it’s about time some Final Fantasy villains started appearing that are in the story, Final Fantasy villains who aren’t over exposed.

Image

Have more Disney characters leave their worlds and interact with each other

Kingdom Hearts should consider exploring the characters lost from their own world’s concept more. It happened a bit in the first game but would be the perfect way to include characters who are popular but don’t have a world that would work as well.

Image

Dr. Facilier as a boss battle

It doesn’t matter if there is a Princess & The Frog world or not Dr. Facilier needs to be in this game. He’s the shadow man after all, he’s a perfect Heartless commanding character.

Image

Something from Disney TV shows

While maybe not the best concepts for worlds there should be a Disney show presence in this game. A Perry the Platypus summon is something that I’d like to see.

Image

A Tangled world

Rapunzel as a party member wielding a frying pan. Need I say more?

Image

The other Titans

We’ve faced the Ice and Rock Titans but the Lava and Tornado Titans have yet to make an appearance. Lets see some more Titans.

Image

A Wreck-It Ralph presence

Maybe a world that works like the Tron world in Kingdom Hearts 2 or a Ralph summon. Whatever the case this movie should have a part to play in this game.

Image

The option to fight bosses after you beat them

Maybe as an option at Olympus Colosseum but often I’ve wanted to fight a boss again later in the game but to no luck.

BEDA 2014: 26 – Smash Bros Stage Ideas

Another last minute idea but here are some locations I think would make great stages in the new Smash Bros and some past stages I’d love to see come back.

Image

Yoshi’s New Island

Let’s start with something inevitable. There has been a new Yoshi’s Island stage in very Smash Bros game so far so I fully expect a new one on at least one platform. Since this is a 3DS game it would make sense to have this on the 3DS version.

Image

Tropical Freeze

Not only does it tie into the new Donkey Kong game but it’s a unique design idea. A frozen tropical island, sounds like the perfect stage material. Plus so far the only Donkey Kong stage we’ve seen is the 3DS returning Jungle Japes so this would make a great Wii-U DK stage.

Image

Bowser’s Castle

Weirdly Bowser hasn’t had his own stage yet. I think it’s about time that changed.

Image

Safari Zone

Could make an interesting stage. Have wild Pokémon wandering around in the background. I don’t expect this but it would be pretty neat. It could feature elements from Kanto and Hoenn’s Safari Zones and even Sinnoh’s Great Marsh.

Image

Dinosaur Planet (Sauria)

Regardless of if you liked Starfox Adventures or hated it a dinosaur stage would be pretty neat.

Image

Windfall Island

Toon Link should have a Wii-U stage and assuming Pirate Ship doesn’t return Windfall would be a neat place since you’ll often find yourself returning to it. Outset and Dragon’s Roost are other good choices.

Image

Hyrule Temple

One of my favourite stages. I would love to see it come back.

Image

Flat Zone

Perfect for the 3DS version and I’m certain Mr. Game & Watch will be back.

Image

Mushroomy Kingdom

World 1-1 as a stage, what’s not to like?

Image

Wario Ware

A Brawl stage that I think could be at home on the 3DS rather than the Wii-U.

Image

Peach’s Castle

I just liked it.

Image

Mushroom Kingdom II

When thinking about stages that would suit the 3DS this one seemed perfect. The mix of sprites and 3D would be right at home there.

Image

Pokémon Stadium or Pokémon Stadium 2

Maybe even a new one?

Image

Big Blue

Bunny Hood Sonic keeping up with the cars, classic.

Image

Corneria

Another old favourite.

Image

The Summit

The Ice Climbers deserve a stage and I hate Icicle Mountain.

Image

Green Hill Zone

The new Sonic stage isn’t called Green Hill Zone, perhaps that means this stage will be back.

Image

75m

Because it’s a piece of history.

BEDA 2014: 25 – PENGUINS!

Image

It’s World Penguin Day. I can’t think of a topic so… PENGUINS!!

Image

The difference between baby King and Emperor Penguins.

Image

Yes Polar Bear Cafe had episodes that featured a penguin sentai series.

Image

Interesting trivia, Penguin here has the same voice actor as Levi from Attack on Titan.

Image

There were a lot of different types of penguin in Polar Bear Cafe.

Image

There was even a penguin card game.

Image

I was particularly amused by the King Penguin and Emperor Penguin interactions.

Image

I’m mostly just talking about Polar Bear Cafe. Which you should watch if you haven’t seen yet.

Image

Happy World Penguin Day.

PENGUINS!!!

BEDA 2014: 24 – Amazing Spider-Man 2 Review

Image

Last year during BEDA I watched and reviewed The Amazing Spider-Man. Now the sequel is out and I went to see what it was like.

First off this movie is a huge improvement. The strengths of the last film have more focus while only having one of its problems coming back. This was a fun movie, not Spidey’s best but a good one.

Image

Lets talk about the wall crawler himself. I think Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man performance is way better than Tobey Macguire’s, we get more of the Spider-Man wisecracks than any other Spider-Man film. His costume is also better, it has a nice hint of the Ultimate Spider-Man (Peter not Miles) costume to make it different from the Rami trilogy suit and I think it’s the best live action Spider-Man suit yet. Oh and best of all, the mask stays on! Seriously the only times we see Spider-Man with the mask off are when it makes sense (getting changed or romancing Gwen Stacey). Spider-Man’s inability to leave his mask on has been a problem every Spider-Man film until now has suffered from but this movie finally put an end to that stupidity.

Image

One concern people have had about this movie is the risk of the “too many villains” problem Spider-Man 3 had. We have Electro and the Green Goblin along with Rhino thrown into the mix. While the villains didn’t get as much attention as they deserved it wasn’t from there being too many of them. No it was from too much attention being given to the “everything is connected to Peter’s parents and Oscorp, Peter Parker is destined to be Spider-Man” subplot from the last film, which I hope has finished now. As far as balancing the villains out I think they did well, it was only really Electro and Harry that were the main villains and their stories were connected so when they teamed up it wasn’t random like when Venom approached Sandman in Spider-Man 3. Plus this time the Goblin lives to appear in another movie which makes the lack of time spent in Goblin form a bit more acceptable (especially when you learn the real reason this movie has a Green Goblin). Meanwhile the Rhino is something more superhero movies needed, a small time foe to fight.

Image

The Peter/Gwen romance story took up most of the Peter Parker out of costume scenes that weren’t about his parents. I think this movie did a very good job with Gwen and her struggle with her feelings, Peter did come across as creepy stalker a few times but Gwen’s side of the romance was what made this side of the story interesting. Oh and as for the hints at referencing a certain moment in the comics… it is addressed but how I can’t say.

Image

In conclusion if you enjoyed any of the previous Spider-Man films you’ll like this one. It might not be Amazing or Spectacular but it is Spider-Man.
