Lazer Team – Review

So this year I decided I’m going to go to the cinema at least once each month. After I’d made this choice I realized a big problem with this plan: nothing comes out in January. Every film currently showing here in the UK is a 2015 film (including this one according to IMDB). I did go and see The Force Awakens a second time and was going to consider that a loophole until I found out my local Vue was doing a screening of RoosterTeeth’s new film.

Now I’m new to RoosterTeeth. I’ve known about them for a while and have friends who are fans but I didn’t really start watching them until October when I saw the merch table they had and thought that the series RWBY might be worth checking out. I then proceeded to watch the entire first series while I was there. I’ve yet to check out their other shows like Red Vs Blue and X-Ray & Vav but plan to do so soon (I’ve just got a lot of other shows I need to watch first such as Miraculous Ladybug and One Punch Man). So coming to this review the only stuff I’ve already seen from them are RWBY and The Know.

I came out of this movie with mixed opinions. I enjoyed it but still had my fair share of problems too. There were several jokes that felt cliche and just weren’t funny but there were plenty of jokes that did work too and even the bad jokes were at least delivered well. The main characters are all overused tropes but the actors performances prevented them from being annoying. The relationship between Hagan (Bernie Burns) and Zach (Michael Jones) for example is the typical disapproving dad and daughter’s jock boyfriend dynamic but their interactions were still amusing because of the actors performances.

I think the film’s biggest flaw is it’s attempt to appeal to a general audience. The worst jokes are the kind of thing you’d expect from a mainstream comedy, though that said most of this was in the first half of the movie before the Lazer Team actually forms and during the training. Once we get into the second half the comedy gets smarter with only the occasional sex joke from Zach getting on my nerves.

Comparing it to other big budget movies from online creators I’ve seen I’d say this is one of the better ones. The story in particular is a fun one that has a solid structure which films like Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie and Smosh: The Movie were both lacking in. But it’s not quite up to the same level as Camp Takota which almost made my 2014 top 10 list. Overall it falls somewhere in the middle.

I feel bad being as critical of this as I have been because I did like this movie. I guess I just wish I could have liked it as much as some of my friends who also saw it (two of which were at the same screening as me). One last note I should make is there’s a really good song at the start of the credits from The Barenaked Ladies but it seems the movie’s soundtrack isn’t online yet in any form so I’m going to have to wait before I can listen to it again.

Batman: Bad Blood – Review

First 2016 film I’ve seen so far and the start of my new project of reviewing every film I see for the first time this year. This is the third film in DC’s Son of Batman series.

While I did enjoy Son of Batman and last year’s Batman Vs Robin they weren’t as good as DC’s older animated films such as Under the Red Hood or Crisis on Two Earths. This film on the other hand is honestly one of the better Batman movies I’ve seen.

Influenced by the aftermath of Final Crisis Dick Grayson has become the new Batman in Bruce Wayne’s absence and Damian Wayne has returned to being Robin. We also see the introduction of Batwoman (Kate Kane) and Batwing (Luke Fox) into the Bat Family. And this sets up the main thing I like about this movie, it’s a Batman movie with barely any Bruce Wayne in it. It’s the Batman movie I’ve always wanted.

I’ve always found Bruce Wayne to be the least interesting character in the Batman series. With so many adaptations focusing on loner Batman brooding about his parents it’s nice to have a film that pushes him aside to focus on the people he’s inspired. Dick reluctantly wearing the cowl despite his attempts to distance himself from Batman, Damian taking his father’s teachings from the last two films to heart and the origin stories for Kate and Luke.

Honestly my only real issue is the characters that get left out such as Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown.┬áBut as much as I’d like to see Steph and Tim I understand wanting to keep things simple and we’ve got a pretty decently sized team that I really hope sticks around for more movies. Batwing in particular is just getting started.

This was a great film to start the year with. It also has made me think since I plan on ticking more films off my To-Watch list this year I should make an effort to see all the Batman movies I’ve missed and then put together a list of all of them from worst to best. As such I won’t say where I’d place this next to the other films only that it’ll be high up on the list but not the best.

Disney Infinity Skydome Wishlist

So something I feel 3.0 is really lacking in is new skydomes. So I figured I’d put together a wishlist of locations I think they should add either in 4.0 or an update for 3.0.

It’s already in the game and looks great but is limited to the Force Awakens playset. In fact something you’ll see a lot of in this list are playset locations that don’t have skydomes for the toy box. While there are other desert skydomes in the game already Jakku really stands out because it’s a junkyard.

Star’s home dimension. I’ve said before that Disney Infinity needs more TV show content and Star Vs The Forces of Evil is filled with content that would be great for the series.

The Enchanted Forest

Speaking of TV content I’ve been watching One Upon A Time recently and with the season I’m up to really increasing the number of designs ripped straight from the films (in particular all the stuff from Frozen) it seems like Disney are putting more money behind it. With that in mind maybe it’s time to put some of the designs from the show into Disney Infinity.

New York

I really liked the way New York looked in 2.0 but it was only accessible in the Marvel playsets. I can understand not being able to unlock the iconic buildings as set pieces (though that would be pretty neat) but they could at least make a skydome with them in. After all they have one for Peter Pan that has Big Ben and a view of London.

More Gravity Falls content is always welcome.

Ancient Greece

There is a disappointingly low amount of Hercules content in this game. That needs to be fixed.

Mount Olympus

See previous entry.

Arendelle (summer)

It may have spent the majority of the movie covered in snow but I’d love to see an alternate version of the Frozen skydome for the way it normally looks.

Life is like a hurricane…

Not only is this skydome limited to the Twilight of the Republic but you spend most of your time on Naboo indoors that you barely get a good look at the planet itself.

I just liked the way this planet looked in the film.

I really like the designs in this movie, especially its take on Wonderland itself. Plus there’s a new film coming out…

Clawtooth Mountain

The Good Dinosaur had some really great visuals and it would be a shame if the only thing Disney Infinity got out of the film was one character and a bunch of mounts.

Hundred Acre Wood

The Hundred Acre Wood

I’d especially love it if they kept the look of being book illustrations.

It’s going to be a location in the upcoming Marvel Battlegrounds playset and the toy box really needs more Marvel content.

I’ve heard mixed opinions on Oz the Great and Powerful but the film’s existence is a good excuse to have Wizard of Oz content in Disney Infinity.

Paradise Falls

I’m surprised this wasn’t already in the game to be honest.

Another playset location that needs to appear in the toy box.

Hallow Bastion

I don’t know how much Kingdom Hearts content will be added now that they’ve got the Keyblade and a King Mickey costume but I’d love to see some of the original locations. Especially this one from the end of the first game.

And that’s my list. I expect I’ll be making another Disney Infinity wishlist again soon.
