Your Name – Review

As this year draws to a close I knew I wanted to try and find one new anime film to watch. So when I not only heard about this film but that my local Vue was showing it I knew I had to check it out.

One of the first things I noticed was that they were showing the dub. It’s been a while since I last watched dubbed anime but fortunately the dub for this movie was pretty good. It has some talented voice actors and no one sounded distractingly familiar.

As for the film itself it’s really good. It takes the commonly used body switch concept and puts a new spin on it. These differences are what make this the best film to use the formula that I’ve seen. I especially like how they regularly switch back and get to experience the effect they have on each other’s lives.

The film is directed by Makoto Shinkai who also directed 5 Centimeters Per Second. Much like that film Your Name features really beautiful sky and scenery shots that were especially stunning to witness on the big screen. If you have the chance to see this in the cinema I highly recommend it. The visuals are also complimented by a fantastic soundtrack by the band RADWIMPS which is without a doubt one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard this year (and this year has had a fair amount of great soundtracks).

If you want to see some of this year’s best films this is without a doubt one that you should watch even if you don’t really watch that much anime. I only really need to see two more films before I’ll be ready to write my top 10 list, one of those films will be later this week…

Office Christmas Party – Review

And by something a bit newer I mean one that came out today. I figured since I’m focusing on watching Christmas movies and 2016 movies this month I should see a 2016 Christmas movie.

It’s funny but mostly because of its cast rather than the writing. The script isn’t bad but it’s not great either, it’s just just alright.

What makes these characters funny are what the actors bring to them. Mary for example is a pretty cliche character for a movie like this but Kate McKinnon’s performance makes her one of the funniest characters in the film.

Unfortunately the film is dragged down by some really boring romance subplots which actually prevent some of the cast from being as funny as they could have been. Olivia Munn’s character Tracey barely gets anything funny to do. While she does contribute to the plot outside of the romance her character just isn’t memorable when compared to the rest. The same goes for Vanessa Bayer’s character who seems like she could have been a funnier character if she’d had more scenes there weren’t tied to these subplots.

So the film does have a few laughs but if you want to watch a 2016 film about a crazy party I’d suggest watching Dirty 30 instead.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation – Review

This movie keeps being brought up whenever I see videos about Christmas movies so I figured I should give it a watch to see what all the fuss is about.

It was alright. It’s got some funny slapstick humour and a good cast but I don’t really feel like watching the other movies in the series or rewatching this next year.

As a Community fan it’s amusing getting to see a young Chevy Chase, especially when there are some scenes where he acts a bit like a younger Pierce. It was also pretty shocking to learn the actor who plays his son is Johnny Galecki from The Big Bang Theory who I didn’t recognize until I started looking up images for this review. This movie also has the voices of the Flying Dutchman from Spongebob and Betty Boop.

It’s an entertaining Christmas movie that can be a bit dated at times but still has its charm. Now for my next Christmas film I’m thinking of seeing something a bit newer…

Die Hard – Review

After watching Gremlins it only makes sense to watch the other “THIS is a Christmas movie?” film, Die Hard. I was actually planning on watching this last year but didn’t get around to it so I made sure to see it early on this year.

I liked it. It’s not nearly as great as people make it out to be but it’s still a fun film to watch. I think a big part of this film’s charm that prevents it from just being a generic action movie is the Christmas setting, without them I’d probably just think this was ok.

One of the film’s highlights has to be Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber. He manages to have some of the silliest lines scenes yet still come across as threatening in other scenes. It’s no wonder this is one of his most famous roles.

Bruce Willis is an entertaining lead and he does have many of the film’s funniest lines. As a character John McClain isn’t very interesting but works for the story, not sure how they made four more movies about him though. The second movie is also set at Christmas though so I’ll probably watch it later this month rather than wait for a movie marathon of the rest of the series (which I will be doing next year). But I think I should probably pick a Christmas film that actually includes the word Christmas in the title as the next Christmas film to watch.

Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite – Wishlist

So we’re getting a new Marvel Vs Capcom game and of course one of the first things I did after I saw the trailer was think about the characters I’d love to see them include. I decided to come up with possible rivalries when picking characters and decided to leave out any X-Men characters as I doubt we’ll be getting any (and if we do Deadpool would have been the only one on the list).

Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) and Ibuki

These are the two I’m hoping for the most. Kamala is my favourite Marvel character and I really feel Ibuki would be the best Capcom counterpart for her. Sure Sakura could work too but Ibuki has a more unique moveset and is the Street Fighter III character who has the best chance of being included.

Venom and Nemesis

I remember the disappointment when Venom wasn’t included in MvC3 and hearing the reason was apparently connected Marvel not wanting them to use the classic Venom. But now Marvel are making Venom more like his old self in their comics again so he has a chance. Nemesis seemed like the right counterpart for him plus while I’ve never played the Resident Evil games I do really like his design and recall him being good in UMvC3.

Rocket Raccoon and a Palico

Come on Monster Hunter team, let Capcom use something from your franchise this time. A Palico would be perfect for this series and of course when selecting its Marvel counterpart I had to go with another small mammal…

Squirrel Girl and Juri

Speaking of small mammal lets include Marvel’s most powerful character; The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Sure she might be a bit OP but who wouldn’t want to defeat Akuma and Nemesis with a bunch of squirrels? Meanwhile Juri is the Street Fighter character I’d like to see the most after Ibuki and the obvious choice to represent Street Fighter IV.

Black Widow and Jill Valentine

Even if we don’t get the full MCU Avengers team I still think Black Widow should be included as a counterpart to Jill. When looking up images to use for Jill this made even more sense after seeing her design from Resident Evil: Revelations.

Hulk and Asura

The Hulk is obviously going to be in this game but rather than matching him against another buff character like Haggar or Zangief I wanted to match his rage with Asura. Plus there was DLC for Asura’s Wrath where he fought Ryu and Akuma that used the Street Fighter IV engine so he already has a moveset they can work from.

She-Hulk and Chun-Li

Chun-Li is another character who I have no doubt about being in the game. Sure I could have picked fellow lawyer Phoenix Wright as a rival for She-Hulk on this list but Chun-Li just seemed like a more fitting choice.

Daredevil and Phoenix Wright

Of course having a lawyer rivalry is still something I want to see in this game. Not only does Phoenix Wright need to return but the Marvel Netflix shows deserve some representation in this game.

The Punisher and Dante

Honestly the Punisher is here mostly as a replacement for Deadpool but I do think he works as a rival for Dante. Just note that if any X-Men characters do get confirmed I’m swapping him out for Deadpool.

Black Panther and Rashid

Street Fighter V should have some representation and Rashid is the new character I like playing as the most. He and Black Panther get to be rivals because of rumours about Rashid being royalty.

Thanos and Akuma

While we’ve seen that Ultron and Sigma are the main villains of this game with the Infinity Stones being part of the mechanics Thanos can’t be too far behind and Akuma tends to find his way into these games so why not make them rivals?

And those are just the characters I could come up with a rival/counterpart for. I’ve missed doing these wishlists so I might make another one at a later date after more characters are confirmed.

Moana – Review

We’re getting to the end of the year and this is one of the last films I was looking forward to before the year started. It’s also clear the staff at Vue are used to me, the person I bought the tickets from gave me two straws before I even asked.

Disney have released a fair amount of great movies this year and this is one of them. It probably won’t get as popular as Frozen but it’s still a really good movie of similar quality (and yes Frozen is a really good movie, you’re just sick of seeing it everywhere).

The cast are fantastic. This is Auli’i Cravalho’s first role and she does an amazing job as Moana, I’m looking forward to seeing more from her after this. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also does a great job as Maui, in fact it’s probably the best role I’ve seen him in.

And of course as a Disney musical you have the songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame wrote the songs for this movie and I loved them. Songs that stand out to me are How Far I’ll Go, You’re Welcome and Shiny (which is a villain song inspired by David Bowie). I’ve been listening to these songs ever since I left the cinema, in fact I made sure to purchase the soundtrack before seeing the movie because I knew I was going to want to do exactly that just from the songs in the trailers. I keep changing my mind about which song I like the most. If you like Disney musicals, Hamilton and Flight of the Concords then you’re probably going to want to do the same.

Having seen this I have successfully seen a movie in the cinema every month but I’ve still got at least a couple more visits to the cinema to go before I’m ready to make my top 10 list.

Gremlins – Review

It’s finally time to start watching Christmas movies and through the influence of LEGO Dimensions I decided to watch this one first. Yes, it is a Christmas movie.

It’s very funny, the film knows people aren’t going to be scared by the horror and instead embraces the ridiculousness of the Gremlins. The designs for the Mogwai and the Gremlins are very impressive as are the puppets, I especially like how Gizmo and Stripe aren’t the only designs that stand out.

I also like how this movie isn’t just set at Christmas, being Christmas is part of the plot. It may not look like a Christmas movie on the front of the DVD but it does in the actual movie. Anyway if you’re going to make a Christmas horror movie I’d much rather watch a silly horror comedy about gremlins than all the Christmas horror movies about evil Santa. If the sequel is also set at Christmas I might try and watch it later this month too.
