My Little Pony: The Movie – Review

Being a fan of the show this was of course one of the films I was looking forward to the most this year, especially since I’ve already been enjoying the Equestria Girls films they’ve been releasing over the last few years.

I really liked it. It’s always a great experience watching a movie of a show you like on the big screen. Being the animation fan that I am I loved the art style, it’s similar to the show while also different enough to give it this cinematic look.

Of course one of the best things about the movie has to be the soundtrack. My personal favourite song is One Small Thing, having Pinkie Pie sing a duet with a character voiced by Kristin Chenoweth was a genius move and I’ve been listening to it a lot. Another highlight is the villain song Open Up Your Eyes with a fantastic performance from Emily Blunt.

On that note the guest voices all do a great job. They fit right in with the regular cast and those that get to sing are really good at it. It was obvious Kristin Chenoweth and Sia were going to be great singers since that’s what they’re known for this was the first time I’d heard Emily Blunt and Zoe Saldana sing. It’s unclear if any of these characters will ever reappear in the show since some are played by big name actors but if they did it’d be pretty neat.

This is very much a movie for fans of the show. If you’re not already one this probably isn’t the best place to start if you’re curious about what the show is like. As a fan of both the show and animated musicals I consider it one of this year’s best films so far.
